Metal or asphalt? It depends on you

This is the comparison we get asked about most, and the real answer isn’t “one is better.” Asphalt is the affordable, proven default that fits most homes. Metal costs more up front but lasts far longer and sheds Utah snow beautifully. The right pick comes down to your budget and how long you plan to own the house.

Here’s the straight side-by-side, followed by who each one is really for.

Who it's for

Which one should you choose?

Skip the debate and match it to your situation.

Choose asphalt if...

You want a proven roof at the best price, you’ll likely move within 10-15 years, or you want the widest range of styles and colors. It’s the right call for most Utah homes.

Choose metal if...

This is your long-term or forever home, you want to shed heavy snow and never think about the roof again, or you love the modern look. It costs more now but can be the last roof you buy.

The tie-breaker

Do the math over 30 years, not just today. Metal’s higher price spreads over a much longer life. If you’ll be there to see it, it often wins. If not, asphalt usually does.

Why homeowners choose us

Straight answers to the worries we hear most

Maybe you’ve been burned before, or you’re worried you will be. Here’s what makes us different.

“My roofer took the deposit and disappeared.”

We hear this one a lot, and it’s part of why Jen started Roofing Utah. We treat every job as a real commitment to your home. That means showing up when we say we will and finishing what we start. And if something needs attention down the road, we’re still here to take the call.

“The leak came back a week later.”

If a repair doesn’t hold, it wasn’t really a repair. So we look for what’s actually causing the leak instead of just covering the spot that’s easiest to reach. We use the right materials and install them properly, so the next rainstorm isn’t a reason to worry.

“I can't tell if I need a repair or a replacement.”

This is one of the most common spots to be stuck in, and it’s where a lot of homeowners get pushed toward the priciest option. We’ll give you an honest read instead. Sometimes a repair is all you need. Other times, replacing the roof is the smarter call over the long run. We’ll tell you which one it is and why.

“Storm chasers keep showing up at my door.”

After a big storm, out-of-town crews show up uninvited, promise a great deal, and ask for money upfront. Some of them you never see again. We’re a local company based in Roy, working across Ogden, Davis County, and the Salt Lake Valley. We were here before the storm and we’ll be here after it, which matters when you need someone to stand behind the work.

“I have no idea if my insurance will cover this.”

Insurance claims are confusing, and most roofers leave you to sort it out on your own. We don’t. We’ll help you document the damage, figure out what your policy actually covers, and handle the paperwork the insurer wants. Whether it was hail, wind, or one of those classic Wasatch Front storms, having someone who knows the claims process makes a real difference.

FAQs

Questions Utah homeowners ask us

Clear answers, no runaround.

Is a metal roof worth the extra cost in Utah?

If you’re staying long-term, often yes. It can last twice as long as asphalt and sheds snow well. If you’ll move in a few years, asphalt is usually the smarter money.

Is a metal roof really that loud in the rain?

Less than people think. With solid decking and proper underlayment, a modern metal roof is far quieter than the old barn-roof reputation suggests.

Which handles Utah snow better?

Metal sheds snow the best and resists ice dams well. A properly built asphalt roof with good underlayment and ventilation also handles our winters fine, so it’s not a dealbreaker either way.

Does a metal roof help resale value?

It can. Buyers see a roof they won’t have to replace, plus the modern look. Asphalt is more expected, so it’s less of a selling point but also less of a concern.

Can I put metal over my existing asphalt roof?

Sometimes, but it’s not always the right move. We’ll inspect the deck and tell you honestly whether an overlay is fine or a tear-off is the better long-term choice.

MEET THE FOUNDER

Jen Silver

Jen Silver founded Roofing Utah in 2019. By then she’d already spent years in the Utah roofing business, starting out on the phones in inside sales and working her way up to general manager of a local roofing company, where she nearly doubled its annual sales in under two years.

She built Roofing Utah to be a contractor homeowners could count on from the first call to the final walkthrough. Today it’s one of the fastest-growing roofing companies in Utah, and Jen is a founding member of Women-Owned Businesses of Northern Utah.
