Murray has some of the oldest homes in the valley. It was settled in 1848, spent decades as a smelter town, and the residential historic district near downtown still has Late Victorian homes and Craftsman bungalows built between 1870 and 1954. Around them are the post-war ramblers that filled in the rest of town. Roofs on houses like these reward a roofer who takes their time.
Roofing Utah does repairs, full replacements, hail and wind claims, and gutters across Murray, from the historic blocks downtown to Fireclay and Cottonwood West. We’re women-owned, licensed and insured, and we handle the Murray permit and inspections for you.
On an older Murray home, there are often surprises under the shingles: plank decking, two or three old layers, or flashing that’s been patched more than once. Post-war homes usually have shallow pitches, and those need the right underlayment to stay dry. Here’s what we take on:
Murray sits on the valley floor at about 4,300 feet, with Big and Little Cottonwood Creeks running through town. You don’t get the heavy snow loads they get up on the benches, but you do get plenty of freeze-thaw, and older homes without much attic insulation tend to build up ice at the eaves. Summer storms can be worse. On June 18, 2018, half-dollar hail came right through Murray and Cottonwood Heights.
When we look at an older Murray roof, we check for brittle shingles, worn flashing around the chimney, and any low-slope sections over porches and additions. In our experience, that’s where most of the leaks here start.
Murray City requires a permit for a residential re-roof, along with its own re-roof form, and an inspector checks the work. The city wants ice shield at the eaves, metal or ice shield in the valleys, double underlayment on low-slope roofs between 2:12 and 4:12, and attic ventilation that meets code. We file the paperwork, build to those standards, and meet the inspector. If your house is in the downtown historic district, we can also suggest materials that keep its original look.
We also serve the cities around Murray:
It does. Murray City requires a re-roof permit, its own re-roof form, and an inspection. We handle the paperwork and build to the city’s requirements.
Often it’s plank decking and more than one old layer. We tear down to the deck, add solid sheathing where it’s needed, and tell you about it before we start, not halfway through.
Probably. Low-slope sections need different underlayment or a membrane, not regular shingles, and that mismatch is behind most of the porch leaks we see.
Absolutely. We’ll inspect the roof, document the damage, and meet your adjuster so the claim reflects what actually happened.
