After the storm come the storm chasers

It’s a pattern in Utah: a hailstorm rolls through, and within days, unfamiliar trucks are going door to door promising free roofs. Some are legitimate. Many are ‘storm chasers’, out-of-state crews who blow in after a storm, sign up as many homeowners as they can, do fast work, and are gone before any problem shows up.

The good news is they’re not hard to spot once you know the signs, and choosing a real local roofer isn’t complicated.

Warning signs

Red flags of a storm chaser

If you see several of these, be very careful.

They showed up uninvited after a storm

Reputable local roofers don’t usually need to canvass door to door the day after a hailstorm. Pressure at your door is the first red flag.

They pressure you to sign now

‘Sign today or you’ll miss out.’ A real roofer gives you time to think and get other opinions. Urgency is a sales tactic.

They offer to waive your deductible

This is illegal, it’s insurance fraud, and it tells you exactly what kind of company they are. Walk away.

No local address or real reviews

Out-of-town plates, a cell number, a brand-new or empty online presence, and no verifiable local track record. If they’re gone next season, so is your warranty.

They want money up front

Large upfront payments before work begins are a bad sign, especially paired with pressure.

What to look for

How to choose a roofer you can trust

The opposite of the list above.

Local and established

A real local address, a history in the community, and a reputation you can check. A local roofer is still here when you need them.

Licensed, insured, and reviewed

Proper licensing and insurance, plus genuine reviews from people in your area. Ask, and verify.

Honest about your options

A good roofer will tell you if you don’t have a claim, or if a repair beats a replacement. Honesty over the upsell.

Stands behind the work

Workmanship backed by a warranty from a company that will actually be around to honor it.

Why homeowners choose us

Straight answers to the worries we hear most

Maybe you’ve been burned before, or you’re worried you will be. Here’s what makes us different.

“My roofer took the deposit and disappeared.”

We hear this one a lot, and it’s part of why Jen started Roofing Utah. We treat every job as a real commitment to your home. That means showing up when we say we will and finishing what we start. And if something needs attention down the road, we’re still here to take the call.

“The leak came back a week later.”

If a repair doesn’t hold, it wasn’t really a repair. So we look for what’s actually causing the leak instead of just covering the spot that’s easiest to reach. We use the right materials and install them properly, so the next rainstorm isn’t a reason to worry.

“I can't tell if I need a repair or a replacement.”

This is one of the most common spots to be stuck in, and it’s where a lot of homeowners get pushed toward the priciest option. We’ll give you an honest read instead. Sometimes a repair is all you need. Other times, replacing the roof is the smarter call over the long run. We’ll tell you which one it is and why.

“Storm chasers keep showing up at my door.”

After a big storm, out-of-town crews show up uninvited, promise a great deal, and ask for money upfront. Some of them you never see again. We’re a local company based in Roy, working across Ogden, Davis County, and the Salt Lake Valley. We were here before the storm and we’ll be here after it, which matters when you need someone to stand behind the work.

“I have no idea if my insurance will cover this.”

Insurance claims are confusing, and most roofers leave you to sort it out on your own. We don’t. We’ll help you document the damage, figure out what your policy actually covers, and handle the paperwork the insurer wants. Whether it was hail, wind, or one of those classic Wasatch Front storms, having someone who knows the claims process makes a real difference.

FAQs

Questions Utah homeowners ask us

Clear answers, no runaround.

What is a storm chaser roofer?

An out-of-town crew that follows storms, signs up homeowners fast, does quick work, and leaves. If a problem shows up later, or you need your warranty, they’re long gone.

Is it legal for a roofer to waive my deductible?

No. Offering to cover or waive your insurance deductible is fraud in Utah. Any company that offers it is telling you not to trust them.

Should I use a local roofer or a national company?

Local, in almost every case. A local roofer knows Utah’s weather and codes, is accountable to the community, and will still be here to honor the warranty.

How do I verify a roofer is legitimate?

Check for a real local address, proper licensing and insurance, and genuine local reviews. Be wary of pressure, upfront payment demands, and deductible-waiving offers.

Why does it matter if the roofer is still around later?

Because a roof warranty is only as good as the company behind it. If they’ve left the state, your warranty is worthless when you need it.

MEET THE FOUNDER

Jen Silver

Jen Silver founded Roofing Utah in 2019. By then she’d already spent years in the Utah roofing business, starting out on the phones in inside sales and working her way up to general manager of a local roofing company, where she nearly doubled its annual sales in under two years.

She built Roofing Utah to be a contractor homeowners could count on from the first call to the final walkthrough. Today it’s one of the fastest-growing roofing companies in Utah, and Jen is a founding member of Women-Owned Businesses of Northern Utah.
