Gutters protect a lot more than you'd think

Gutters aren’t glamorous, but they’re doing important work every time it rains or the snow melts. They channel water off the roof and away from your foundation. When they sag, clog, or leak, that water goes somewhere it shouldn’t, against the fascia, down the siding, into the basement, or pooling around the foundation.

As a roofing company, we see the damage bad gutters cause to roofs and homes constantly. That’s why we do gutters right, whether you need a repair, a full replacement, or guards to keep them clear.

Why it matters

What good gutters protect

When gutters do their job, you never think about them. When they don’t, here’s what’s at stake.

Your roof edge and fascia

Overflowing or backed-up gutters rot the fascia and soffit and work water back under the roof edge, one of the most common gutter-caused roof problems.

Your foundation

Water dumping next to the house instead of away from it is a leading cause of foundation and basement moisture problems. Gutters are cheap insurance against expensive ones.

Your siding and landscaping

Overflow streaks siding and erodes the beds below. Properly routed downspouts keep water where it belongs.

Against ice dams in winter

Clogged gutters trap water that freezes at the eaves, feeding the ice dams that push water under your shingles. Clear, working gutters are part of the defense.

Fall checklist

Get your gutters ready for a Utah winter

Fall is gutter season. A little work before the first big storm saves you from ice, overflow, and fascia damage come January.

Clean them after the leaves drop

Wait until the trees are mostly bare, usually late October into November along the Wasatch Front, then clear the gutters and flush the downspouts. Cleaning in early fall just means doing it twice.

Make sure the downspouts drain away from the house

Snowmelt has to go somewhere. Check that every downspout is connected and has an extension or splash block carrying water several feet away from the foundation, not pooling against it where it can freeze and seep in.

Tighten loose hangers now

A gutter full of snow and ice is heavy. Hangers that are just a little loose in October are the ones that let go in February. If a run is sagging or pulling away, have it repaired before the snow, not after.

Keep water flowing to fight ice dams

Clogged gutters hold water at the eaves where it freezes and builds ice dams that push water under the shingles. Clear gutters (and gutter guards if you have a lot of trees) are part of the fix, along with good attic insulation and ventilation.

Got a metal roof? Protect the gutters from sliding snow

Snow slides off metal roofs in heavy sheets that can tear gutters right off. Snow guards on the roof hold it in place so your gutters survive the winter.

Why homeowners choose us

Straight answers to the worries we hear most

Maybe you’ve been burned before, or you’re worried you will be. Here’s what makes us different.

“My roofer took the deposit and disappeared.”

We hear this one a lot, and it’s part of why Jen started Roofing Utah. We treat every job as a real commitment to your home. That means showing up when we say we will and finishing what we start. And if something needs attention down the road, we’re still here to take the call.

“The leak came back a week later.”

If a repair doesn’t hold, it wasn’t really a repair. So we look for what’s actually causing the leak instead of just covering the spot that’s easiest to reach. We use the right materials and install them properly, so the next rainstorm isn’t a reason to worry.

“I can't tell if I need a repair or a replacement.”

This is one of the most common spots to be stuck in, and it’s where a lot of homeowners get pushed toward the priciest option. We’ll give you an honest read instead. Sometimes a repair is all you need. Other times, replacing the roof is the smarter call over the long run. We’ll tell you which one it is and why.

“Storm chasers keep showing up at my door.”

After a big storm, out-of-town crews show up uninvited, promise a great deal, and ask for money upfront. Some of them you never see again. We’re a local company based in Roy, working across Ogden, Davis County, and the Salt Lake Valley. We were here before the storm and we’ll be here after it, which matters when you need someone to stand behind the work.

“I have no idea if my insurance will cover this.”

Insurance claims are confusing, and most roofers leave you to sort it out on your own. We don’t. We’ll help you document the damage, figure out what your policy actually covers, and handle the paperwork the insurer wants. Whether it was hail, wind, or one of those classic Wasatch Front storms, having someone who knows the claims process makes a real difference.

FAQs

Questions Utah homeowners ask us

Clear answers, no runaround.

Do you install gutters, or just roofs?

Both. We’re a roofing company that also handles gutters, which makes sense, they work together, and bad gutters cause roof problems. We repair, replace, and protect them.

What are seamless gutters?

Gutters formed in one continuous piece for your home, with no seams along the runs where leaks usually start. They look cleaner and hold up better than old sectional gutters.

How much do new gutters cost in Utah?

It depends on the size of your home, the linear footage, and the material. We give free, itemized quotes so you know exactly what you’re paying for.

Can bad gutters really damage my roof?

Yes. Backed-up gutters rot the fascia, work water under the roof edge, and feed ice dams. Gutters and roofs are more connected than most people realize.

Do I need gutter guards?

If you deal with a lot of leaves or pine needles and you’re tired of cleaning gutters, they’re worth considering. We’ll give you an honest take on whether they make sense for your home.

When should I clean my gutters in Utah?

At least twice a year: once in late spring and once in late fall after the leaves are down. If you have pine trees or big deciduous trees over the roof, you may need to do it more often, or consider gutter guards.

Should I fix my gutters before winter?

If they’re sagging, leaking, or pulling away, yes. Snow and ice add a lot of weight, and a weak gutter that’s hanging on in the fall often comes down mid-winter, sometimes taking fascia with it.

The Roofing Utah team

MEET THE FOUNDER

Jen Silver

Jen Silver founded Roofing Utah in 2019. By then she’d already spent years in the Utah roofing business, starting out on the phones in inside sales and working her way up to general manager of a local roofing company, where she nearly doubled its annual sales in under two years.

She built Roofing Utah to be a contractor homeowners could count on from the first call to the final walkthrough. Today it’s one of the fastest-growing roofing companies in Utah, and Jen is a founding member of Women-Owned Businesses of Northern Utah.
