How to choose
Ignore the marketing. These are the five things that decide the right material for your home.
If this is your forever home, a longer-lasting material like metal or tile can be the better value. If you’ll move in a few years, asphalt often makes more sense.
Asphalt costs the least to install; metal and tile cost more but last far longer. The cheapest roof today isn’t always the cheapest roof over 30 years.
Utah roofs take a beating from snow load and ice dams. Some materials shed snow and handle freeze-thaw better than others, which matters a lot up against the mountains.

Asphalt shingles, by a wide margin. They’re affordable, come in lots of styles, and last 20-30 years, which fits most Utah homes and budgets.
Metal and tile. A quality metal roof can last 40-70 years, and tile can go 50 years or more. They cost more up front but can be the last roof you ever buy.
Metal sheds snow well and handles ice dams better than most, but a properly installed asphalt roof with good underlayment and ventilation also holds up fine. The install matters as much as the material.

Jen Silver founded Roofing Utah in 2019. By then she’d already spent years in the Utah roofing business, starting out on the phones in inside sales and working her way up to general manager of a local roofing company, where she nearly doubled its annual sales in under two years.
She built Roofing Utah to be a contractor homeowners could count on from the first call to the final walkthrough. Today it’s one of the fastest-growing roofing companies in Utah, and Jen is a founding member of Women-Owned Businesses of Northern Utah.
