Repair it, or replace it?

Gutters don’t last forever, but they also don’t need replacing at the first problem. The trick is telling the difference between a gutter that needs a repair and one that’s genuinely at the end of its life. Replace too early and you waste money; wait too long and you risk damage to your roof edge and foundation.

Here are the signs that point to replacement rather than another repair.

The signs

Signs it's time for new gutters

A few of these means repair. A lot of them means it’s time to replace.

Cracks, splits, or rust throughout

Isolated damage can be fixed. Cracks, holes, or rust showing up all along the runs means the material is failing and patching won’t keep up.

Sagging that keeps coming back

If gutters pull away or sag again soon after being re-secured, the gutters or the fascia behind them are worn out, not just loose.

Leaking seams everywhere

Old sectional gutters leak at the joints. When several are going at once, seamless replacement is usually cheaper than chasing every seam.

Peeling paint or water marks on the house

Streaks down the siding or peeling paint below the gutters means they’re overflowing regularly, a sign they’re undersized or past their life.

Pooling water or foundation issues

If water is collecting by the foundation, the gutter system isn’t doing its job, and that’s a problem worth fixing properly, not patching.

Why homeowners choose us

Straight answers to the worries we hear most

Maybe you’ve been burned before, or you’re worried you will be. Here’s what makes us different.

“My roofer took the deposit and disappeared.”

We hear this one a lot, and it’s part of why Jen started Roofing Utah. We treat every job as a real commitment to your home. That means showing up when we say we will and finishing what we start. And if something needs attention down the road, we’re still here to take the call.

“The leak came back a week later.”

If a repair doesn’t hold, it wasn’t really a repair. So we look for what’s actually causing the leak instead of just covering the spot that’s easiest to reach. We use the right materials and install them properly, so the next rainstorm isn’t a reason to worry.

“I can't tell if I need a repair or a replacement.”

This is one of the most common spots to be stuck in, and it’s where a lot of homeowners get pushed toward the priciest option. We’ll give you an honest read instead. Sometimes a repair is all you need. Other times, replacing the roof is the smarter call over the long run. We’ll tell you which one it is and why.

“Storm chasers keep showing up at my door.”

After a big storm, out-of-town crews show up uninvited, promise a great deal, and ask for money upfront. Some of them you never see again. We’re a local company based in Roy, working across Ogden, Davis County, and the Salt Lake Valley. We were here before the storm and we’ll be here after it, which matters when you need someone to stand behind the work.

“I have no idea if my insurance will cover this.”

Insurance claims are confusing, and most roofers leave you to sort it out on your own. We don’t. We’ll help you document the damage, figure out what your policy actually covers, and handle the paperwork the insurer wants. Whether it was hail, wind, or one of those classic Wasatch Front storms, having someone who knows the claims process makes a real difference.

FAQs

Questions Utah homeowners ask us

Clear answers, no runaround.

How do I know if I need new gutters?

Widespread cracks or rust, seams leaking in several places, sagging that won’t stay fixed, and overflow marks on the siding are the big signs. A few isolated issues usually just need a repair.

How long should gutters last?

Aluminum seamless gutters often last 20 years or more with reasonable upkeep. Utah’s freeze-thaw winters and heavy debris can shorten that if they’re neglected.

Is it cheaper to repair or replace gutters?

In the short term, repair almost always. But if the gutters are failing in multiple places, repeated repairs add up and replacement is the better value. We’ll give you the honest math.

Can I replace just part of my gutters?

Sometimes, if only one section has failed. But mixing old and new sectional gutters can look off and the old parts may fail next. We’ll advise what makes sense.

What happens if I wait too long to replace failing gutters?

Overflowing, failing gutters rot the fascia, work water under the roof edge, and can cause foundation moisture, all more expensive to fix than the gutters themselves.
